Updated on 20 Sep 2021

The choice of seat on board depends on the fare product chosen or the frequent flyer Miles&Go status.

In Business Class - seat selection is free of charge, regardless of the type of fare product chosen.

In Economy Class - seat selection will be free of charge depending on the fare product or Miles & Go status or otherwise, it may be paid as an ancillary service.

Economy Class seat types:

  • Leg Space - 1st row of wide-body aircraft

  • Extra Legroom / Emergency exit* - extra space  emergency exit rows between the EconomyXtra area and the Standard area;

  • or Preferred Area -front rows (red seats) - from the first row of Economy Class to the row before the Extra Legroom area;
    • seat selection will be free for passengers travelling with Classic or Plus fares or have TAP Miles & Go Gold or Navigator status; these passengers also have free access to extra legroom seats  (emergency exit row) on medium-haul flights.
    • Passengers travelling with Discount or Basic fares may access this area as a chargeable ancillary service. See tables below for service fees.

  • new seating type: “Leg Space”:  applicable to the first row of wide-body aircraft only

  • different prices depending on the advance purchase of the seat in relation to the departure date:

(1) or voluntary change of the seat assigned at check-in automatically

Notes:

The service can be booked and paid for via GDS's Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre, Apollo and Worldspan, or during online check-in.

When the service is booked via GDS, a time limit for issuance  - OPW/OPC - is added to the PNR and an EMD must be issued within the next 72 hours or the service will be cancelled. In case the flight is already within the 72 hours frame, the EMD will have to be immediately issued, depending on flight departure time.

In the case of Classic or Plus fares, where seating is free of charge, the time limit will disappear as soon as the ticket is issued (when the system recognizes the chosen fare product).

Notes

a) At check-in the system automatically assigns seats and any change (in the reservation or during check-in process) will have a cost if the purchased fare does not include seat choice or if it is modified for a seat with characteristics different from those that are included. For example, a long-haul ticket issued in Classic brand includes EconomyXtra seat reservation, however, if the passenger changes to an Extra Legroom seat (which is not included in the fare), the applicable amount for the new seat type will be charged.

 b) In case of equipment change the system's “Smart Reseating” will replace an assigned seat for another keeping the same characteristics (Emergency Row/Extra Legroom, EconomyXtra/Preferred Zone or Standard). Due to different equipment, the chosen/purchased row may be changed to another. However, the system will check and assign a new seat with the same characteristics. For example, seat 4C in  “EconomyXtraPreferred Zone” and can be changed to seat 6D that also corresponds to an “EconomyXtra/Preferred Zone”.

c)   In case a passenger is assigned a seat of lower value than the one he paid for,  a refund through EMD is due.

d) If a passenger voluntarily cancels or re-assigns a seat after EMD issuance, the paid amount is not refundable but can be used for the same type of service within 1 year from date of EMD issuance.

 e) In case of loss of connection due to flight irregularity and the same type of seat is not available on the new flight, the service may be fully refunded and refund processed through our services at  Fale Connosco (Talk to us).

f)  In reservations with multiple passengers, each passenger should be associated with a seat separately. Thus, there should be as many lines with seating information as the number of passengers. If a passenger is exempt from payment and his/her seat is assigned on the same line of another passenger who is not, the system can not differentiate and will cancel both seats if the deadline for payment is reached and there is no valid EMD.

g) FAMILY SEATING:

Whenever a PNR with adults and children travelling together is created, a “robot” automatically assigns seats for all the passengers, together, regardless of the fare product purchased.

However, any voluntary action to change those seats will be subject to the conditions of the fare purchased (for example, if the automatically assigned seats of passengers holding a DISCOUNT fare are modified, the new seats will be subject to the applicable service fee according to fare rules).

At the moment the “robot” performs under the following conditions:

  • On individual PNRs and not on Groups (RBD G);
  • On Economy Class Cabin reservations only;
  • On TP operated flights (flight numbers TP001 through TP3999);
    • Not applicable on codeshare flights (either TP operating flights marketed by partner airlines or TAP marketing flights operated by partner airlines);
  • Valid only for reservations with adults and children on the same PNR;
  • Valid for reservations with tickets issued for TP flights (or a TST created, in case of GDS Amadeus);
  • Does not perform any action on previously assigned seats chosen by  passengers or travel agent;
  • Assigns seats in the standard zone, from back to front (excluding the last 4 rows);
    • Firstly, the robot will try to sit all the passengers side by side or at least 2 seats together (1ADT+1CHD), the remainder passengers being seated in the immediate next row and in front of the other passengers.

These actions are performed shortly after the creation of the PNR, so if there are any aircraft changes resulting in involuntary changes or cancellations of the seating, the robot will act again on the reservation but closer to the travel date (exempting or booking again seats together for the family). If there is a change or cancellation that is voluntary, this means that it was requested by the passenger and so the robot will no longer act on this reservation.
